What is Direct-Linking?____

Remote-Linking is when you use an image on your site, email, messageboard, forum or guestbook that is linked from somebody else's website. Wich also means you are using the image-url from somebody else to add to your page. This is also called "Bandwidth Theft".

Do you want to pay for somebody else's website?

If your answer is "NO", then why should they pay for yours? That is what happens when you link directly to somebody else's graphics or website. For example, if instead of saving a graphic, image, file or midi onto your own hard drive and uploading it to your web site, you use someone else's url (website-address) with the image, this is called remote linking. The act of remote linking puts an excessive load on an ISP (Internet Service Provider.... which is the host of any persons website).

Each time someone views your website, the owner of the site you are linking to also has their files accessed. This decreases the amount of web space allowed to the owner and it also slows down their site. When a person pays for their website, they also pay for the amount of bandwidth they can use in a months time. When they go over that amount, they either have to pay for more bandwidth or shut down the site until the end of the month. Which is not fair to the person paying, just because you are stealing from them. So don't steal!!

Many graphic sites are closing because of remote linking, which is a shame. Also, many providers forbid "storage". When you remote link, the provider sees it as the owner using their site for storage. This has also caused many graphic sites to close down.

Always save graphics to your own hard drive (computer) and upload them to your own server. Don't include anyone else's url in the body, background or img src tags. Load the image to your own server from your own files on your own computer. Just select "save image as" when you right click rather than going into their properties and copying the image url...

Either do it the right way, or ask the website owner. The other alternative is to pay the website owner the amount of money they have to pay extra because of you using their bandwidth. In most cases if you are caught, the owner of the website you are stealing from can write directly to the hosting site that provides you the access for your website to be seen and they can shut your website down until you correct the problem. Especially to those of you who have a free website: Remember this, if you don't want to pay, why should someone else pay for you??!!

What is Direct-Linking?____

Direct-Linken is wanneer je een plaatje plaatst op jouw website, in jouw e-mail, forum of gastenboek dat gekopieerd is van een andere website. Dit betekent ook wanneer je een image-URL van iemand anders op jouw pagina plakt. Het wordt ook wel diefstal van bandbreedte genoemd!

Zou jij willen betalen voor de website van iemand anders?

Als je antwoord "NEE" is, waarom zouden zij dan wel voor jouw website betalen? Dat gebeurt namelijk wel als je een plaatje of een website van iemand anders gebruikt.

Bij voorbeeld, in plaats van een tekening, plaatje, bestandje of midi op je eigen harde schijf (op je eigen computer dus) op te slaan en hem up te loaden naar jouw website, kan je iemand anders zijn of haar URL (het adres van de website waar het plaatje staat) met het plaatje gebruiken. Dit wordt ook wel "Direct-Linken" genoemd.


Het toepassen van "Direct-Linken" zorgt voor een extra ballast op de ISP (Internet Service Provider; dit is de host van iemands website). Elke keer dat iemand jouw website bezoekt, worden de plaatjes van de eigenaar van de site waar jij naar linkt, ook zichtbaar en gebruikt. Dit zal de webruimte verkleinen van de website eigenaar die hier ook voor moet betalen. Ook vertraagt het de website en het zorgt er ook voor dat alles niet optimaal werkt.

Wanneer iemand voor zijn website betaald, dan betaald hij ook voor het aantal bandbreedte die hij per maand kan gebruiken. Wanneer iemand zijn maximale bandbreedte overschijdt, dan zal die persoon meer voor z'n website (bandbreedte) moeten betalen of in het ergste geval zal zijn website offline gaan tot het eind van de maand. Dit is niet eerlijk tegenover de betalende persoon, alleen maar omdat jij van hem steelt. Steel dus niet!!

Veel websites met plaatjes worden gesloten en dat komt alleen maar doordat anderen "Direct-Linken" naar deze websites met plaatjes. Dit is dus erg jammer en niet eerlijk. Ook zijn er veel providers/webhosting die het verbieden om direct te linken naar plaatjes van andere sites. Wanneer je wel aan Direct-Linken doet dan zal de provider dit zien en denken dat je hun service gebruikt als opslagruimte. Hierdoor worden vele websites gesloten.

Bewaar altijd plaatjes op je eigen harde schijf (computer) en upload ze naar je eigen server. Verwijs niet direct naar de website van iemand anders. Niet via tekst, plaatjes en achtergronden die je op je eigen website gebruikt.

Plaats het plaatje op je eigen server vanuit je eigen bestanden van je eigen computer. Kies gewoon "save image as" of "bestand opslaan als" als je op de rechter muisknop klikt in plaats van naar "eigenschappen" te gaan en de URL te kopieren/gebruiken.

Wanneer je niet precies weet hoe het moet, kan je het altijd de eigenaar van de website vragen. Een ander alternatief is de eigenaar het bedrag te betalen wat zij extra moeten betalen omdat je van hun bandbreedte gebruik maakt. In veel gevallen als je gepakt bent zal de eigenaar van de website waar je van steelt, direct melden aan de hosting site die jou toegang voor je eigen website verschaft en melden dat je van hun steelt. Zodoende kan jouw hostingbedrijf jouw website uit de lucht halen tot wanneer je het probleem verholpen hebt.

En voor degenen die een gratis website hebben: onthoud dat als je niet wil betalen,
waarom zou iemand anders dan wel voor jou willen betalen??
